Culture and society shape our human inclinations but cannot change them

“Swept away” makes you think whether this is what everyone secretly dreams about.

“Swept away” shows that when your world changes or becomes smaller, choices become limited, perceptions change, and power and control shift as you lose the societal bearings which have guided you your whole life. The film shows that behind the stage of society, people are ruled by natural instincts and their need for survival.

Yet, the film is less about society and class wars than about power struggles between a man and a woman. As this review puts it, the main conclusions of the film are “(1) that once the corrupt facade of capitalism is stripped away, it's the worker, with the sweat of his back, who deserves to reap the benefit of his own labor, and (2) that woman is an essentially masochistic and submissive creature who likes nothing better than being swept off her feet by a strong and lustful male.” (http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/swept-away-by-an-unusual-destiny-in-the-blue-sea-of-august-1976) “Swept away” makes you think whether this is what everyone secretly dreams about.
