Marina Abramovic, one of the most influential contemporary performance artists. She has explored the extremes of bodily performance and pain as well as those of the relationship between the artist and his audience, and finally the intimate relationship between one human being to another.
This photo depicts her performance at the Museum of Modern Art, which was a culmination of her work in the last 40 years. In short, Abramovic sat across any member of her audience without speaking for an indefinite period of time. Seeing the other in the absence of words and other barriers turned out to be revelatory. This act inspired a vast range of unpredictable reactions from her audience, from crying or laughing, to undressing or anger. And, while the performance artist and her temporary partner see each other, we see what we've been missing.
